Today, we spotlight Vargön Alloys, a major European producer of high carbon ferrochrome (HC FeCr), with an annual production capacity of 190,000 tonnes. As the steel industry moves towards lower-carbon production, Vargön Alloys is working to reduce its carbon footprint, including a target to replace 30% of fossil coal and coke with green reductants by 2030.
In EMPHATICaL, Vargön Alloys is one of the end users of the EMPHATICaL technology, together with CELSA. Vargön Alloys brings its expertise in ferrochrome production and metallurgical processes to the consortium, helping define the requirements and challenges associated with implementing the EMPHATICaL technology at industrial scale. With HC FeCr production generating around 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of ferrochrome produced, CO₂ Capture and Utilisation is an important element in exploring pathways towards lower carbon ferrochrome production.
Vargön Alloys also contributes to exploring the potential of industrial symbiosis, renewable energy integration and waste heat valorisation, including opportunities to connect CO₂ utilisation and other resources with local industries and stakeholders.
Behind Vargön Alloys’s contribution is a dedicated team including Annelie Papadopoulos, Ludvig Ånnhagen and Guldana Gubasheva Aktan.
