Inside EMPHATICaL: Partner Spotlight on DLR

March 25, 2026

As part of our series “Inside EMPHATICaL”, we’re introducing the organisations making our vision possible. The consortium brings together 21 partners from 11 European countries, covering the entire value chain for technical, environmental, social, and economic innovation.

Today, we spotlight the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Germany’s national research centre for aeronautics, space, energy, transport, and security. DLR develops advanced technologies and innovative solutions that contribute to industrial innovation and societal benefits, supporting the transition to more sustainable energy and mobility systems.

In EMPHATICaL, DLR is responsible for the design, construction, and testing of the methanol/water vapour compressor for the cl-HPAD unit, a key component of the project’s e-methanol pilot plant. This work supports the demonstration of TRL7 flexible operation of structured packing cl-HPAD technology processing variable crude methanol streams, with the goal of achieving over 60% energy savings compared to conventional distillation while maintaining comparable mass transfer performance and pressure drops.

Behind DLR’s contribution is a dedicated team including Michael Lockan, Panagiotis Stathopoulos, Deeksha Singh, Kristin S., Shashank Singh Rawat and Katja Sachs, whose expertise in process engineering, energy systems, and advanced technology development supports the scale-up and demonstration of innovative e-methanol production systems.
