Inside EMPHATICaL: Partner Spotlight on CA.RE. FOR. Engineering

As part of our series “Inside EMPHATICaL”, we’re introducing the organisations making our vision possible. The consortium brings together 21 partners from 11 European countries, covering the entire value chain for technical, environmental ,social, and economic innovation.

Today, we spotlight CA.RE.FOR. Engineering (CArbon REduction and FORestry Engineering), a consultancy specialising in supply chain sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Social LCA (S-LCA), with a focus on advancing bioenergy and renewable energy technologies in EU research projects.

In EMPHATICaL, CARE leads the project’s environmental and social sustainability work: performing preliminary and detailed E-LCAs of novel e-MeOH production value chains, comparing environmental performance to reference scenarios, and conducting Monte Carlo robustness checks. In parallel, CARE carries out S-LCA using the Social Hotspot Database and SimaPro, collecting quantitative inventory data to assess socio-economic risks “cradle-to-gate.” Beyond these assessments, CARE defines sustainable deployment pathways for e-MeOH technologies, estimating economic, environmental, and societal impacts for different uptake scenarios toward 2050, including CO₂ transport and CCS-related considerations.

Behind CARE’s contribution to the project there is Marco Ugolini ,whose expertise in supply chain sustainability, environmental modelling, and socio-economic assessment drives EMPHATICaL’s innovations from lab to large-scale application.
