EMPHATICaL (Efficient Methanol from Pumped Heat and Calcium Looping) is an EU-funded project aimed at pioneering innovative solutions to transition the metallurgical industry to zero-emission and circular carbon processes.
Challenge
The metallurgical industry must reduce its carbon dependence and address difficult-to-abate emissions to meet the 2050 climate goals. EMPHATICaL is bridging the gap by providing a cost-effective, sustainable solution, integrating renewable energy and circular processes to transform CO2 into valuable products.

Innovation
EMPHATICaL is at the forefront of technological advancements, being one of the first applications to combine Calcium Looping (CaL) and CL-HPAD (Closed Loop Heat Pump Assisted Distillation) in the metallurgical industry to produce e-methanol.
A cutting-edge process for efficiently capturing CO₂ from metallurgical gases and converting it into e-methanol using green hydrogen from electrolysis.
This technology is used in EMPHATICaL to purify the e-methanol produced for fuel- or chemical-grade use and reduces overall energy consumption by 25%.
Building the future
EMPHATICaL leads innovation with a pioneering pilot plant, guided by a comprehensive economic and environmental assessment to ensure long-term viability.
The process will be demonstrated at a test site using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) emissions from steel production and Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) emissions from ferrochrome production.
A first-of-its-kind initiative to demonstrate the viability of the EMPHATICaL concept and process with a target of reducing 41 million tons of CO₂ annually by 2050.

EMPHATICaL is developing a pioneering TRL 7 demonstrator to enable a scalable, cost-effective path to net-zero emissions by 2050. Our innovative approach establishes a pathway for carbon circularity and industrial symbiosis, ensuring a sustainable future for metal and alloy production.
